What does it mean to Buy to Open, Buy to Close, Sell to Open, and Sell to Close?

What does it mean to Buy to Open, Buy to Close, Sell to Open, and Sell to Close?

This may seem confusing, but it is really quite simple. Open means to enter (or open) a position and close means to exit (or close) a position.

Buy to Open means that you are entering a trade by buying an option. if you sell the option to exit the trade, you Sell to Close.

Sell to Open means that you are writing (or selling) an option to enter the trade, if you want to exit the trade you will buy back the option that you sold or Buy to Close
